How many mobile network operators are there in the world?

There is no single right number, because "operator" can mean four different things. This dataset lists 3,042 MCC/MNC allocations across 227 countries and 238 Mobile Country Codes. Of those, 1,598 are marked operational, which resolve to about 812 distinct operator brands. The "how many" you want depends on which of those layers you mean.

The four ways to count

Each layer answers a different question, and the numbers get smaller as you move from raw code allocations toward real-world companies:

Why the raw count is so high

The full allocation count is inflated by codes that are not live networks. A country's regulator reserves ranges, assigns test codes, and leaves retired networks on the books. In this dataset only about half of all allocations — the 1,598 operational ones — represent a network in service; the rest carry statuses like reserved, not-operational or unknown. So if someone says "there are over 3,042 mobile networks", they are counting code slots, not operators.

Why one operator can hold several codes

Going the other way, a single operator can consume many MNCs. An operator may hold spare codes, run separate codes for IoT/M2M or legacy technologies, or operate in several countries under the same brand. And MVNOs — virtual operators that resell a host network's radio access — sometimes get their own MNC and sometimes share the host's, so whether you count them changes the total. That is why "distinct brands" (812) is a more honest headline than raw allocations: it collapses a network's multiple codes back into one name.

A defensible one-line answer: there are on the order of a few hundred to roughly 812 operational mobile-network brands worldwide — spread across 227 countries — sitting on top of 3,042 MCC/MNC allocations in total. The exact figure hinges on whether you count MVNOs, spare codes and dormant networks.

How many have real scale?

Fewer still carry a meaningful subscriber base. In this dataset only 811 networks have a published subscriber figure at all — the long tail of small regional and virtual operators simply does not report one. The giants dominate: a handful of carriers in China and India alone account for more subscribers than most continents combined, which you can see in our ranking of the largest mobile operators in the world.

Counting by country

The per-country spread is just as lopsided. A few markets — led by the United States, which uses MCCs 310316 — carry dozens of allocations each, while many smaller nations have three or four. We break that down in countries with the most mobile network operators. To answer "how many" for a specific place, filter the registry by country or query the free API and count the operational rows yourself — every figure on this page is reproducible from the same data.
